A friend of mine that works at San Jacinto College is looking for college students to judge a robotics competition on Friday, 2/3, Saturday, 2/4 and/or Saturday, 3/3. All days are 7:30am to 5pm, and they will provide a shirt (they will need a shirt size) and food (breakfast and lunch).

2012 Undergraduate Summer Research Grant (USRG)program

The Dwight Look College of Engineering at Texas A&M University invites students from your program to apply for the 2012 Undergraduate Summer Research Grant (USRG)program. This program is funded by the college and modeled after the NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU). USRG and REU students from engineering and across the university interact at various social and academic events. The program description and application can be found at http://essap.tamu.edu/usrg. We encourage your students to apply soon as the deadline is Friday, February 8, 2012.

During this summer research experience, participants work closely with faculty members on current or individual research projects, attend development and GRE workshops, make a formal poster presentation of their research experience, and submit a final written report describing the results of their research.

To participate in the program, students should have:

1. Interest in and a desire to actively participate in ongoing or individual research projects

2. Minimum 3.25 cumulative GPA

3. Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident

4. Major in engineering or related science or math curriculum

5. Completed sophomore year (at least 60 hours) by the end of Spring 2012

6. Plan to graduate no sooner than December 201

Funding:

Each participant will receive a $5,000 scholarship for support during the ten weeks. The program will also pay tuition and fees for one credit hour of a required independent study/research; provide housing (or housing allowance); and pay up to $400 for travel expenses for non-TAMU participants.

Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates at Northwestern University

The Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) at Northwestern University offers a 9-week, paid summer research experience for undergraduates. The students are paired up with some of the leading research professors in science and engineering fields. Research areas include ceramics, nanocomposites, photonics, nanoparticles, and molecular electronics. Computing 1331 Lab instructors Needed for Spring

We are looking for two people to supervise the lab sessions of
CHEE/CIVE/INDE 1331 in Spring, 2012. Good knowledge of MATLAB and
Excel is required. Some experience in a related activity (teaching,
tutoring, help desk, etc.) is favored, though not essential. Other
good attributes would include: good spoken English, presentation
skills, patience, familiarity with the ENGI computing labs, and a good
grade in this or a related course. The pay is $1500 for the term; the
duties are about 11 h per week (averaging half labs and half office
hours, though the two people can trade duties). Late-term labs are
very quiet.

Based on past experience, these positions will fill quickly. Please

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

The Goldwater Scholarship is awarded to outstanding sophomores and juniors interested in pursuing a research career in science, math or engineering. Each scholarship covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 annually. Regarding eligibility, candidates must be full-time sophomores or juniors at the time of application, be a U.S. citizen, natural or resident alien, and have at least a 3.75 gpa. Strong candidates should have at least 3 months of prior research experience. Candidates must be nominated by UH and may not apply directly. The UH Goldwater application deadline is November 28, 2011, and the national deadline is January 27, 2012. Merage Scholarship for the American Dream

The Merage Foundation is dedicated to promoting opportunities for new Americans to achieve their American Dream. We need student volunteers to help with the CIVIL ALUMNI REUNION.

We are not asking you to volunteer the entire night, just a couple
hours out of the night.

We need nine (9) more students to help set up at 4 p.m. then you can shower
there at the CRWC in the locker rooms and come out and enjoy the rest of the
evening.

We need seven (7) more students to help at registration from 6 to 8 p.m.

We need nineteen (19) more students to help during the casino night from 8
p.m. to 1 a.m. The nineteen more students we need will be broken up into
multiple groups such as:
* Transition team from mixer to casino room (15 to 30 minutes maximum)
* Auction team from 10 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
* Bar attendants (shifts from 8 to 9 p.m., 9 to 10 p.m., and 10 to 11
p.m.)
* Clean up from 12 to 1 a.m.

As you can see this schedule leaves plenty of time for you to have fun.
Also, remember we will be offering a scholarship to one of the volunteers
and you will not be eligible unless you volunteer.

ExxonMobil, one of the world's largest publically traded International oil & gas companies, has partnered with the Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) to create fellowships in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) for Hispanic college students. Through HHF's Latinos On Fast Track (LOFT) program, ExxonMobil looks to nurture motivated college students across the country, with a passion for Engineering and Science.

Selected students will be exposed to a top quality company by participating in this signature mentoring program. Each student will be paired up with one of ExxonMobil engineers/scientists to learn how their knowledge is applied in a corporate setting.

Fellowship components:

Attention Students: It's that time of year again.....the Crawfish Boil is scheduled for Sunday, May 1 from 1-5pm. We have 3 shifts available this year. The sign-up forms are available at the front desk of the engineering dean's office and please feel free to come to my work area if you have any questions regarding the forms.

Attention Organizations: Please do not just write the name of your organization to "reserve" slots for your group....it's not fair to the other students that come in and want to sign up. I will need your name, email and if you are representing an org., I will need the name of your group. Please print your contact info legibly as I will be emailing you all the info you need prior to arrival that day.

You will get paid $7/hr and that money can be paid to your organization or you can choose to keep it for yourself. You will also get to enjoy the festivities when you are NOT ON DUTY! You must sign up to work in advance....not the day of the event!

Hello fellow SHPE members and University Staff,

SHPE-TBAC is a SHPE Professional chapter based around NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX (Space Shuttle and International Space Station Mission Control). Half our members are directly involved in the day to day operations of both the Shuttle and ISS as well as the design of America's next space vehicle. The other half our chapter work in the Oil/Chemical industry.

Each year we are able to provide approximately 4 $1,000 scholarships to STEM students who either attend college in the Houston Metroplex or are from the Houston Metroplex. We are meeting at the IEEE lounge in the Y Building EVERY FRIDAY starting on Friday March 4 at 11am-2pm to help collect, sort, drop off and dispense collecting bins around the Engineering Buildings. Please drop by or call me at 281 978 1493 if you have trouble.

Please spread the word through your organizations and any green enthusiasts to help collect!! We are asking each organization (along with dedicated volunteers) to sign up for a week to collect with their members (Monday-Sunday). We have some great ideas and excitement stirred about Recycle Mania!

Our drop off locations will be laid out tomorrow. The IEEE Lounge will be our headquarter for volunteer sign up dates, sorting, and storing. We have gloves, hand-sani, and materials needed for recycling. All we need is YOUR HELP! :)

HENAAC Scholars Program

We hope the start of 2011 is setting the tone for a productive and prosperous year. We are writing to ask that you promote to your student members a significant opportunity offered by Great Minds in STEM - the HENAAC Scholars Program.

The goals of our scholarship program are to ensure and increase college retention of students with a 3.0 grade point average or higher; guarantee college graduation with an undergraduate technical degree in four-five years; and, to contribute to Hispanic communities by producing role models for future generations; all the while securing the country's place as the finest technological leader in the world.

Last year we celebrated our ten year anniversary by awarding educational grants to over 100 STEM students. Every year SHPE National holds a nationwide election to determine the new members of the National Board of Directors (NBOD) and the Regional Student Representatives (RSRs). The NBOD professional positions up for election this year are the National President, National Vice President, and Regional Vice Presidents for Regions 1, 3, 5 and 7. Their two-year term of office is from July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2013.

Three student members are also elected to the NBOD, the National and Vice National Undergraduate Representatives and the National Graduate Representative. Seven positions are also available for Regional Student Representatives, one from each region. The one-year term of office for student representatives is from July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012.

Frito Lay, Inc. will host our February Technical Speaker Series at their national headquarters located in Plano, Texas. SHPE DFW Scholarship

The SHPE DFW Chapter is accepting applications for its annual scholarship program for students pursuing degrees in engineering, math, computer science, and science at DFW colleges and universities. The scholarship application will be available online at www.shpe-dfw.org in mid-February. The postmark deadline to submit applications for 2011-2012 is April 1, 2011. This year, high school seniors and continuing college students will be eligible to apply for the scholarship. Last year, SHPE DFW awarded $5,000 in scholarships to students attending area higher education institutions.

Happy New Year! The Engineering Alumni Association (EAA) will provide a total of five (5) scholarships ($2,000 each) to eligible University of Houston Engineering students for the Fall 2011-Spring 2012 academic year. The applicant must be declared as an engineering major at the University of Houston when applying and also the semesters of the award. The scholarships are open to current Cullen College of Engineering students, and the specific criteria listed below:

1. EAA Outstanding Engineering Student Scholarship - $2000 ($1,000 per semester)

1. - Standard criteria: engineering major, 30 hrs at UH, 12 hrs/semester of award, citizen or permanent resident

2. - Minimum Cumulative GPA of 3.0 with a minimum major GPA of 3.0

3. - Junior or Senior classification

4. - Well-rounded student

5. - Outstanding contributions in engineering-related activities (on/off campus)

6. - Outstanding leadership in UH student engineering societies

2. EAA Future Engineer Scholarship - $2000   ($1,000 per semester)

We hope the semester is going well. As students struggle with a tough economy, scholarship information is always in high demand, therefore the Frontier Fiesta Association would like to highlight a scholarship opportunity.

The Frontier Fiesta Association is committed to providing scholarships to students that illustrate outstanding academic achievement or service to the community. For students to be eligible for either category, they must meet all the following requirements:

1. Applicants must attend the University of Houston in the Fall 2011 semester

SHPE UH adopted two kids Guillermo is 9 and America is 2. They are in need of a few items to make it through the year. Guillermo likes legos, cars and hot wheels. He wears size 10 child shirts/jacket and 8 slim in pants. America likes Elmo and Barney and wears toddler size 2T. Things to donate include new clothes, toys and books or money.

Volunteers will accompany groups of students to a local non-profit organization that you may choose from the list below. Please plan to arrive on campus by 8am. Buses will provide transportation to and from each charity. All groups will spend roughly 3 hours at their organization, completing a variety of projects, before returning to the school around 12:30pm. YES Prep Southwest is located at 4411 Anderson Road, Houston, TX, 77053 (for directions, click here). Each group is led and accompanied by more than one teacher (chaperone), so you will not be asked to take on that responsibility. Please let me know which group you all would like to work with by Friday (you guys can split up if you’d like). If you have any other questions or concerns do not hesitate to contact me! Our students are very excited to meet you all and hear your stories, and I am confident it will be a very enjoyable experience for you all as well.
